End of the World, 2011
from the series The Barking Wall
During the production of this image I was thinking a lot about the end of the world. I was reading a book about it at the time, and there was all this talk about "the end" going around in movies and on TV. Over that week, I started to construct this ghost-like figure in my studio. I was envisioning that big ghost from "A Christmas Carol" and "The Ghost of Christmas Yet To Come”, especially the one from the Muppet version of story. That ghost represented a grimness of the future; it was haunting, the way the sound of clinking chains echoed, calling us to the dread from which it came. I wanted to make a lone figure, just as haunting as a representation of that ghost, and I wanted to end this body of work with a sense of dread, to lead into what I was planning for the next series which focuses on the Apocalypse.
