New York
1982, San Francisco, CA

Darcy Rogers was born and raised in San Francisco, CA. She spent her childhood going on family road trips, splashing in the waves at the beach, and taking pictures along the way. After graduating from UC Santa Barbara with a degree in English Literature, she took a job at a tech startup company. After a year of processing purchase orders and invoices, she decided this wasn't what she wanted to be doing, and jumped ship to New York to pursue her true passion - photography. Darcy has participated in numerous exhibitions throughout the United States, including the American Photographic Artists, Something Personal exhibition. She was the winner of PDN Faces, Portrait Photography Contest (Environmental) in 2010, and was featured as the PDN Photo of the Day in 2014. Her client list includes Manhattan College, the New York Observer, Prudential, and ElleGirl Japan among others.

The Spring in New York City series started from a simple desire to examine the season of Spring. I moved to New York City in 2011, and when I photographed these first images in 2013, I still felt new to the city. I had moved from San Francisco, CA and the experience of seasons was very unfamiliar and foreign to me. As each season changed into the next, I was struck by nature’s beautiful display, particularly in a city like New York, where it is typically described as crowded and dirty.

I felt I'd found a thread of something, and wanted to continue working on this subject. The next year, I focused on challenging the perception of New York, as a city that is dirty, into a place that is full of the unexpected, of quiet contemplations with nature, and a place where one could find a refuge from the pace of daily life.  I photographed the spring blossoms as they were emerging from winter, to showcase the beauty in their simplicity. I worked with soft light and pastel colors to amplify the subtle elegance of the Spring season, and to celebrate it's arrival.

I photographed these images in Central Park. I was struck by the simplicity of color in the flowers and leaves, against the bright blue cloudless sky, and how the blossoms bobbed with a certain heaviness each time the wind blew through the branches. These were moments of quiet contemplation in the heart of a great city.
