Wooly Sagas

My work is a progression from my travels in isolated landscapes to re-living the experience in the studio from memory. This process is evident both in my paintings as well as a new series of photographs titled “Wooly Sagas”. This series is based on my travels in Iceland in 2009 and 2010. Using Icelandic wool that I processed, dyed, knit, and felted, I created and photographed dioramas reminiscent of the Icelandic landscape. Relying on basic photography without any manipulation to the images, I made a simple rule of working only with a macro lens, wool, water, aluminum, and a mirror to capture this post Icelandic journey.

I re-climbed the mossy green lava hills with my fingers as I assembled the dioramas. The final results are photographs, but the sculpting of wool and my painter’s eyes overlapped in these visualizations, so I consider the finished works as multimedia pieces.  I used Icelandic wool to make the dioramas because the Icelandic landscape is accompanied by an endless supply of sheep. Sheep are seen everywhere and the use of wool is predominant in Icelandic culture.

When a free bag of raw fleece was given to me, I knew that this bag contained the ingredients for my next body of work. I immediately knew I would have to work with my own hands and to learn how to process the wool; to dye it, to felt it, and shape it. I got to know it instead of simply buying it ready made. After I experimented with this free wool, I found a local Icelandic sheep farmer and set out to meet the sheep whose wool I would use for the dioramas. In the photograph “Hrauns’ Saga” I used the wool from the sheep named Hraun, which means lava in Icelandic. This photo depicts a lava filled landscape. Meeting the sheep was important to me, and it gave even more life to the final image. I also had the chance to visit a sheep farm in Iceland in 2010 and personally meet a one day old lamb. This meeting really completed the circle as I now have had close contact to the Icelandic sheep and the very land they survive off of.
