Artist Headshot: Gabriela Herman

Gabriela Herman

New York, USA

Gabriela Herman was born in Newton, MA and settled in Brooklyn, NY after enriching her photographic palette through her many experiences living abroad. She learned to eat crepes in the cafes of France, get lost in the zocalos of Mexico, and dance samba in the streets of Brazil, all with camera in hand. Post college, Wesleyan University, with her dual US-Brazilian citizenship, she relocated to Sao Paulo for four years, where she began her professional career as a photographer.

Self Portraits

Since I began photographing, I have always insisted on being in front of the lens, becoming part of the construction of my images. Photography has become my therapy; an exclusive dialog between myself and the camera where I am pushed to a point of exhaustion, both emotionally and physically.

This work reveals this intimate process between myself and the lens which I invite the viewer to partake in. Initially, my shoots were pure exploration, testing my own body of my physical limits and personal boundaries. I continue to be in this exploration phase, using my self portraiture to help me discover where I am headed. My twenties have been a time in my life when nothing is certain, a feeling I believe many people face. Everything is up in the air. Often I find people use self portraiture to reveal a deep dark emotion confronting something of their past. I feel my self portraiture is quite the opposite.  It is hopeful, looking to the future. While it has certainly helped in dealing with issues, taking pictures also allows for a great opportunity to focus through my uncertainty, create some sanity in the chaos, and explore my sense of self in a constructive manner.
