Kerry Shaw is commercial and fine art photographer, currently living in Toronto. Her work debuted on CITY TV’s Fashion Television as an emerging participant, and won Naked in the House 2004, an annual nude photography competition and Fashion Television documentary testing and showcasing Canada’s best commercial photographers. She had her first publication in the 2006 release of Magenta Foundation’s Carte Blanche, a photography book showcasing 200 of Canada’s brightest photographers. Her work was published again in the fall of 2010 in Flash Forward, an annual book and international photo competition that showcases the top emerging photographers from Canada, the UK, and the United States. Kerry is a collector and whittler of images. As an avid traveler, having spent time in Europe, the Caribbean, South America and Japan, she uses her vast library of images to illustrate the poetic side of life. With a background in dance, video and graphic design, her work exhibits a passion for movement, subtleties in character and expression using clean and vibrant colours.

Water Brother

Water Brother is a series dedicated to my brother Stuart, who died in 2001. These images are part of an ongoing series of landscapes and waterscapes captured on and near lakes, rivers and oceans. Combined images from Paraguay, Aruba, Argentina, Brazil, Japan, Cuba, USA and all over Canada.

I’ve learned to rearrange my longing for my departed brother, by celebrating his existence through epic imagery. I now see him in all forms of waters’ change. He is part of the cycle, a body gone back to the molecular beginnings we all come from. He is a shape shifter and these are my visual meditations.

The images presented here are made up of multiple layers and combinations of captures, sculpted together to create a larger story. Each detailed nuance and gesture of cloud and waters’ surface is a character. They are carefully painted into a choreographed, waterscape dance.

Animal City

I like that photography makes being a voyeur acceptable. A voyeur of myself and the world around me. It’s an opportunity to reflect myself through people/animals/spaces, and project the things I can’t, and don’t, want to communicate with words. Coming from a background in dance, I love to perform. Imagery has become the new stage. Even the process of working with the characters in each image is an opportunity to perform with them, engaging the subtle expressions we might pass over on a normal day. I like where perfection and awkwardness intersect; paradoxes, the good and bad, black and white. That crack between the two is a fantastic place to hang out for a moment.
