Paula Gortázar is an artist, researcher and lecturer, who studied with celebrated Spanish documentary photographer Rafael S. Lobato from 2002 to 2007. After obtaining a Law Degree in Madrid, she moved to London to study photographic arts at Central Saint Martins and the University of Westminster, where she completed an M.A in 2011. She has recently been awarded with a PhD Scholarship by this university and is currently undertaking a doctoral research in contemporary East European photography.
Gortázar’s work is part of numerous private and public art collections, and has been widely exhibited in Canada, the US, the UK and Spain, including The Photographers’ Gallery and the London Film Museum. Her photographs have been published internationally in magazines such as the British Journal of Photography. Among other awards, she has recently been selected for the International Sony World Photography Awards, Flash Forward Festival (Canada), Magnum Agency & Ideas Tap Photographic Award (UK) and Westphoto Annual Photography Prize (UK).
The series Winter Holidays constitutes a personal journey back to childhood memories acquired in a small region of the Spanish Pyrenees. After a long period of absence, the artist returned to what she remembered as a magical white world; a place where the family was brought together to enjoy their Christmas holiday. Using the camera as a tool that helps connect past events with current perceptions, she depicts remembered scenes in order to re-build her particular knowledge of the place and the family history behind it. While physical spaces have remained practically unaltered, the artist’s response to these places has turned them into threatening scenarios, and as she tries to reconstruct her memories, the environment suggests its own hidden but reflective meaning.
