Eamon Mac Mahon
Port Dover, Ontario, 2009
The final installment in our EYE BUY ART series The Canadian Souvenir, was photographed in Port Dover, Ontario, which is situated on the north shore of Lake Erie, and perched on the cusp between Canada and the United States. This image perfectly encapsulates our reverie – and our complex relationship – with the natural landscape that surrounds us; allowing it to grow freely, and at the same time, plundering it’s resources. One of the world’s highly developed countries, Canada has a diversified economy that is reliant upon its abundant natural resources and upon trade—particularly with the United States, with which Canada has had a long and convoluted relationship.
Since 2004, Toronto-based photographer Eamon Mac Mahon has spent up to three months of each year working in the wilderness of northwestern Canada and Alaska. These slow journeys via bush plane have allowed him to intimately photograph remote landlocked communities, and the vast areas of uninhabited land surrounding them. Most recently, Eamon has been documenting the Alberta Tar Sands, and the environmentally tenuous spectacle that is writ large from the perspective of the sky.
