Flight VI, Ascent III (Flares) , 2010
from the series Flight Series
This photographic grid is from Flight Series, a process and time-based photographic series. The structured grid places less importance on individual images and emphasizes the compiled representations of time, unpredictable occurrences and the flight progression of the uncontrolled high-altitude balloons. For the sixth high-altitude balloon flight, my collaborators and I decided to launch the balloon before dawn, in order to record the subtleties of sunrise during the balloon’s ascent. For Flight VI, Ascent III (Flares), I isolated moments in which there were visually enticing or otherworldly lens flares, chronicling the two and a half hour period from when the sun began to crest over the horizon to when the balloon approached its zenith (approx. 100,000 feet/30km).
Flight Series is a collaboration with Justin Hamel and Chris Thompson who engineered the high-altitude balloon flights.
