Flight VI, Descent III (Landing), 2010
from the series Flight Series
This photographic grid is from Flight Series, a process and time-based photographic series. The structured grid places less importance on individual images and emphasizes the compiled representations of time, unpredictable occurrences and the flight progression of the uncontrolled high-altitude balloons. Flight VI, Descent III (Landing) reveals the final descent of the sixth flight. After approximately three hours rising to its zenith,* the balloon exploded and the payload wildly descended back to Earth buffered by a parachute. For this photographic grid, I condensed the last thirty-two minutes of the flight so we quickly travel from the curvature of the Earth to landing sideways in a grassy field. I specifically included images in which remnants of the balloon and its cord are visible in order to reference the object whose journey we are witnessing.
Flight Series is a collaboration with Justin Hamel and Chris Thompson who engineered the high-altitude balloon flights.
*over approx. 100,000 feet/30km into the Stratosphere.
