Untitled #4, 2005
from the series In Vacuum
When I started this series, In Vacuum, I had a specific image in my head that I wanted to create. A lone figure standing in middle of nowhere, a low horizon, and a blank sky. With this image in my mind, I started looking for a place where there is “nothing” on the horizon. I was a student without a car at the time and the only means of transportation I had to get out of Toronto was the GO train. My friend and I went to the train station and I asked the man at the ticket booth where I should go to find a place where there is nothing. The man was perplexed for a second, and asked us what the purpose of our trip was. I told him “to take picture of nothingness”. I’m still not sure he was convinced, but he very kindly recommended a place that was relatively close to the city. We got on the train and went to the town he recommended, and spent hours taking pictures shivering in the cold and mist.
