Walk #6671, Kemijärvi, Finland, 2017
from the series Excursionary Auras, in Situ

This is an image of a sunrise in the Arctic Circle in the town of Kemijärvi, Finland where I spent a month at an artist residency in 2016. I walked around the landscape at sunrise, which was around 10am, the day after the first snowfall, to capture sun rising over one of the three frozen lakes surrounding the town. It was a beautiful scene where the sky lit up with pinks and oranges, which faded into a light blue. To make this piece, a traditional landscape of the sunrise was placed onto an SD card and loaded into my 6’ tall LED light stick. Moving with the light stick allowed me to dance the joy that I felt on that morning walk, this time in front of my camera. I had about 10 seconds to move before my shutter closed, capturing my movements within the twisting sunrise over some pebbly rocks at the shore.
