Twin Houses, Namibia, 2007
from the series Inhabited

This image was taken during a year long around the world trip I took with my husband in 2007 and 2008. We visited 17 countries beginning in Africa and finishing in China. During the trip I worked on my personal photographic projects, that were concerned with habitation and the urban landscape. I tried to focus on subjects that were off the normal lists of tourists shots and focused more on what the places we visited were made of.

The photo of these houses is from a town called Luderitz in Namibia. Like many other Namibian towns, the architectural style is a remnant of German colonization. I was struck by the European architecture being in close proximity to the wild African landscape. These houses are situated between the sprawling sand dunes of the Namib desert and the Atlantic Ocean. Somehow this photo sums up for me the thin layer of civilization that lies between the red earth and the sky. I used my Mamiya 6, a 6x6 medium format camera and Fuji E-6 film which enabled me to get those beautiful rich colors.
