from the series Essential Process

These two images have been conceived as 'companion pieces' of sorts to my series Essential Process. As such, they too are both an enquiry into color, flatness/volume, shape and how the three interact, and a meditation on the fluidity of the creative process itself, its lack of fixed outcome. The subtle modulation of volume by color intimates some kind of figurative reference that is never properly defined, and so creates tension within the surface. As the work navigates this uncertain pre-figurative space somewhere between Color Field and Spatialism, it explores the states of emergence, potentiality, gestation and tentativeness. To make these, I reused intermediate analog prints from a previous project. I was fascinated by the color spectra that I was able to obtain from that material, and it was a captivating journey going back to the 'leftovers' and molding them into something else entirely. The two images can be combined into a larger piece. My personal preference is to pair them vertically with the white-ish highlight at the top.
