Ottawa-based artist Heidi Conrod draws inspiration from a wide-range of sources, spanning from science, literature, nature and philosophy, to Abstract Expressionism and Surrealism. Conrod’s work joins together painting and drawing, abstraction and representation, in intuitive and improvisational ways. Through the act of layering, forms and shapes are multiplied by superimposing, and the space of the canvas expanded. Her works develop over an extended period of time, and define themselves through the process of emergence. Her work explores the nature of direct visual experience, one that involves infinite movement and thought.

"This series investigates the space of city parks, not only as physical spaces but also as mental and imaginary spaces, questioning our relationship to the environment and the increasingly blurred lines between the natural and the artificial. I took a series of photos in city parks In Ottawa over the course of several months in late summer and fall. The distortions in the works were created through collage techniques, scanning and re-photographing through painted glass. The final works offering a transformed vision of reality that oscillate between bucolic visions of nature and a surreal post natural world."
