St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church and monastery opened in 1909 in Brighton, Massachusetts. Inside the church was this small blue chapel, the private space of the priests and seminarians, but used as storage when I visited. The entire 14-acre property was strictly off-limits to women, and if any happened onto the grounds, reconsecration was required. In 1979, the complex was sold to the adjacent St. Elizabeth Hospital, and who used the monastery as a nursing school and dormitory. When I visited the church, a work crew was putting up fencing outside to keep people out. It did not keep us out. In 2020, the municipality approved the redevelopment of the site with condominiums, retaining the church for reuse as a community centre.
