In this series, Becky Comber builds images through a meticulous process of photographic deconstruction and reconstruction. Beginning with her own photographs - often taken in the rural landscapes of Grey County where she lives - Comber prints each image, then manually cuts into the surface using an X-Acto blade or scalpel. She removes negative space, isolates branches, shadows, and lines, and creates openings where the original image once held detail. This cut paper image is then layered, curved, propped, or reconfigured in three dimensions before being re-photographed under controlled lighting. The final artwork is a photograph of a sculpture made from the original photograph - a hybrid form that merges documentation, collage, sculpture, and photography into a single image.

Through this process, Comber transforms natural subject matter into intricate, structural compositions that show her ongoing investigation into the natural world. Branches become linear frameworks; voids become forms; shadows become architecture. The resulting works sit between photography and sculpture, revealing the hidden geometries and spatial rhythms embedded in ecology. Rather than depicting a landscape, Comber rebuilds one - reshaping the forest into an invented terrain that reflects both the physical environment and the act of looking closely.
